Purpose of Insulating a Steel Building

Insulation installed for a steel building performs certain functions and provides the following benefits:

1. Stabilizes the Building Temperature

Insulation in steel buildings slows down the movement of heat in winter (cold air in summer). It helps in providing a building envelope that controls the interior temperature of the building.

2. Reduced Energy Consumption

The insulation traps the thermal energy inside the building. It enables the occupants to regulate the temperature with less power, achieving energy efficiency.

3. Prevents Mold, Mildew, Rust, and Corrosion

Significant indoor and outdoor temperature variations can result in condensation issues that lead to mold and mildew. If molds and mildew are left unattended, they can cause serious health issues to occupants with allergies and respiratory problems.

Steel building insulation controls heat flow and prevents condensation. This insulation controls mold, mildew growth, and extreme issues of corrosion and rust. 

Hence, it lets the building stay in prime condition for longer and protects the health of the occupants.

4. Noise Absorption

Metal building insulation keeps the sound or noise within the building by absorbing the reverberations. This property is amplified if extra interior padding is provided to the building.

Types of Insulation for Steel Buildings

Four different types of materials are used to insulate steel buildings. Each material differs in its function and cost. Insulation for a steel building is selected by comparing the material with the shape, size, location, and purpose of the steel building.

1. Reflective Foil Insulation for Steel Buildings

Reflective or foil insulation is an insulation barrier made of aluminum or aluminized polyester. This insulation significantly brightens the exterior of the building. Foil insulation is easy to install but it is expensive.

2. Fiberglass Insulation for Steel Buildings

Fiberglass insulation is the most popular and cheapest method to insulate steel buildings. They are available in the form of blankets or rolls. 

3. Insulated Metal Panels for Steel Buildings

Insulated Metal Panels (IMPs) are exterior wall or roof panels made of steel skin and an insulating foam core. This insulation is known for its superior thermal properties, design flexibility, quick installation, and aesthetics.

4. Rigid Boards for Steel Buildings

Rigid board insulation is a good choice for roof systems of metal buildings. They are easy to install and provide continuous insulation. Rigid board insulation is made from rugged, dense sheets of certain types of foam. 

Every steel building does not require insulation. But metal building insulation is a good approach for saving money on heating or cooling and for adding to the building’s life.
