Swirl Finish Concrete – Construction, Practical Considerations and Applications

Swirl Finish Concrete

Reading time: 1 minute

Swirl finish is one of the most exceptional types of concrete finish that is generated by smearing the concrete surface in a uniformly overlapping circular pattern. It provides an aesthetically pleasing appearance to the concrete surface and complements a structure like petals on a rose.

This type of finish is favored for outdoor applications because not only does it add beauty to the surface, but also provides a safer walk and stand in comparison with smooth surface finish, specifically during the wet season.

How is Swirl Finish Made?

Swirling concrete surface begins at the last round of floating operation by moving the trowel in swirls or circles. Alternatively, the floating works can be finalized and then deeper and larger swirls can be generated. The depth and shape of swirl finish can be changed as per the customer's desire.

Practical Considerations

By and large, the type of concrete finish shall be selected in such a way that it does not influence the durability and strength of the concrete in future. In this regard, swirl finish needs to be designed in a manner that prevents water trapping otherwise the concrete surface may get weakened by standing water and may lead to damages.

Additionally, cleaning works should be considered while preparations for swirl finish are being done since this type of finish cannot be cleaned easily in comparison to smooth concrete surface.

Applications

Generally, swirl finish is desired for outdoor applications because it is practical and attractive, and the rough concrete surface after smearing provides a safer walk and stand even when it is wet. Examples of swirl finish applications include driveways, patios and pathways, and sometimes garages.
