Window Treatments – Methods and Types

Window treatment is an external modification given to the windows in the form of a cover to improve the beauty of the window and the room. Window treatments can be of two types: Hard treatment and Soft Treatment.

This article gives a basic idea about window treatment methods and their features.

Methods of Window Treatments

The two methods by which window treatment is conducted are:

  1. Hard Treatment
  2. Soft Window Treatment

1. Hard Window Treatments

Hard window treatments are treatments made from hard materials like woods or vinyl materials. Some of the hard window treatment types are :

  1. Window Shutters
  2. Blinds
  3. Shades

Window Shutters

Window shutters are horizontal slats that are made either from wood or polyresin. It is installed in the window frame using a hinge. They can be either stationary or tilt type that does not allow up and down movement. But their slats can be opened or closed to control the light coming to the room. Window shutters can be used either for internal or external window space.

Based on the material used for the manufacture of window shutters, there are two types- Wood Shutters and Polyresin shutters.

Blinds

Window blinds consist of louvers that let light pass inside the room by opening it. It can be opened without lifting the shades. Blinds block the people’s view of the room. Blinds can be of different types based on material like aluminum blinds, wooden blinds, and faux wood blinds. Nowadays, blinds with anti-dust features are also available. Some examples of blinds based on designs are Venetian blinds, pleated blinds, and vertical blinds.

Window Shades

Window shades are fabric pieces used for windows. When the shades open, they roll and stack beautifully. Some shades are transparent that they allow “view through” option through the windows. Different types of window shades are woven wood shades, cellular shades, roman shades, roller shades, etc.

2. Soft Window Treatments

Soft window treatments are window covers made out of soft material. Curtains or drapery are examples of soft window treatments.

Drapery or curtains provides a sophisticated look to the space. These are fabric materials that are drawn across a rod. They can stay stationary or can move to either side of the window.

The curtains come in different styles, fabric, color, and designs. The features of curtains vary depending on their characteristics like fire resistance, noise absorption, oil and dust retention capability, ultra rays deterioration, and life span.

Curtains can be moved either by hand or by remote control. The curtain size of each window depends on the size of the window, type of windows, and the weight of curtain material.
