How to Get a Professional Engineer (PE) License in Mississippi?

In Mississippi, the license for engineers is provided by the Mississippi Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. This article guides through the requirements and procedures to obtain Professional Engineers (PE) license in the state of Mississippi.

Requirements for Mississippi’s PE Licensure

1. The applicant must be a Mississippi resident
2. An Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)-accredited BS engineering degree or a graduate degree in an engineering curriculum
3. Qualify the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
4. Engineering Intern (EI) Enrollment
5. Four years of qualifying engineering experience
6. Qualify Professional Engineer (PE) exam

Mississippi’s Educational Requirements for PE Licensure 

1. An ABET-accredited BS engineering degree or a graduate degree in an engineering curriculum that is ABET-accredited at the undergraduate level coupled with either a non-ABET Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in engineering, a BS degree in engineering technology, or a BS degree in a related science.
2. For graduates of foreign or Non-ABET Universities, an equivalent degree recognized by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) is considered equivalent to an EAC (Engineering Accreditation Commission) of ABET-accredited degree. 
3. If the applicant’s BS degree is not ABET-accredited and does not have a graduate engineering degree from an ABET university, your BS degree must be evaluated by The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) (www.ncees.org). NCEES is the only transcript evaluation service acceptable under Board regulations.

Note: An applicant with just an engineering technology degree is not eligible for PE licensure in Mississippi.

Engineering Intern Enrollment for Mississippi’s PE Licensure 

Before applying for Mississippi’s PE licensure, the applicant must enroll as an Engineering Intern (EI) from the Mississippi Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. The primary enrollment requirements for EI are mentioned here.

Exams for Mississippi’s PE Licensure 

The applicants must qualify for FE (Fundamentals of Engineering Exam) and PPE or PE (Professional Engineer) exams before applying for PE licensure. Only those who have met the educational requirements and have passed the FE exam may appear for the PE exam before gaining the required experience. The Mississippi Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Japan PE/FE Examiners Council (JPEC). This MOU establishes a professional licensure program available to applicants who have passed the FE and PE examinations administered by NCEES/JPEC in Japan and satisfied the licensure requirements for licensure as a Mississippi Professional Engineer.

How to Apply for PE Initial Licensure or PE Exam?

The steps involved to apply for Mississippi’s PE licensure are given below:

1. Download the PE licensure application from the website https://www.pepls.ms.gov/ and fill out the form
2. Provide all the educational qualifications transcripts obtained from the college or university to the board office
3. Provide the verification details of qualified FE Exam
4. Attach the Experience Verification Form(s)
5. Character Reference Forms

The form, with supporting documents and fee, must be mailed to  Miss. Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers & Surveyors, 660 North Street, Suite 400, Jackson, MS 39202. The Board reviews completed applications approximately every two to three months. Approved applications will be officially cited to the exam(s). The applicant will be advised by letter, directing to the exam registration process with the exam proctor, NCEES (www.ncees.org).
