Apple opened its newest store inside a historic tower theatre in Los Angeles, US. The store, known as the Apple Tower Theatre, is designed by Foster + Partners inside an abandoned movie theatre in Downtown Los Angeles.
The building was originally designed by American architect S Charles Lee in 1927 in the baroque revival style. The refurbishment was undertaken in collaboration with the City of Los Angeles and expert preservationists.
The insides of the new store feature a grand entry hall with bronze handrails and marble columns welcoming the visitors.
The upper level of the store is accessible via a refurbished grand staircase. The center of the store has a large retail space called the forum, which features display screens hung in the restored arch.
The renovation project saw the restoration of the theatre’s corner clock tower and upgrading of the blade sign projecting from its side.
The building’s terracotta façade was given a facelift, and the canopy extending over Broadway was reconstructed.
The original balconies of the building remain in situ, and space will be used for workshops and presentations.
Other renovations in the building include restoring the plaster detailing on the walls and ceiling along with reinterpreting the central dome of the ceiling with a fresco.
The building was also given a seismic upgrade and provided with two elevators for better accessibility.
