    Shear strength of soil is resistance against shear come from the footing of structure.     Where c= cohesion

    φ= normal stress

    ∅ = angle of internal friction of soil

     

    In clay angle of internal friction is very less and in sandy soil, cohesion is very less.

    Some of the test is use for finding out shear strength of soil like

    • Ven shear test
    • Triaxial test
    • Plate load bearing test
    • Box test etc

    Anchor bar in single RC ream is provided to hold vertical stirrups. Vertical stirrups are designed to resist shear force. We use 8 or 10 dia for anchor bar in beam.

    In soil pressure

    Total soil pressure on retaining wall is =(0.5)*k*unit weight of soil *height^2

    In that term, k = active or passive coefficient.

    K active = (1-sin∅)/(1+sin∅)

    K passive = (1+sin∅)/(1-sin∅)

    So most of the case that is active pressure active on soil.

    In active pressure it is less than water pressure

    And in passive state soil pressure is higher than water pressure

    Different soil SBC are as follow Bedrock is 574kpa Gravel is 250kpa Sedimentry Rock is 190kpa Sand gravel is 140kpa Sand,silt sand, clayey sand is 95kpa Clay, sandy clay, silty clay is 70kpa In actual site, we conduct several test to find out SBC.

    yes but due to gravel fill result in an increase in active earth pressure so we need to design retaining wall for higher resisting force so is it economical?
