Shear strength of soil is resistance against shear come from the footing of structure.
Shear strength gives soil bearing capacity of structure footing without excessive settlement.
Shear strength of soil is given by coulomb.
Shear strength = c +φ tan ∅
Where c= cohesion
φ= normal stress
∅ = angle of internal friction of soil
In clay angle of internal friction is very less and in sandy soil, cohesion is very less.
Some of the test is use for finding out shear strength of soil like
Why we provide Anchor Bar in a single RC beam?
Vivek Patel
Anchor bar in single RC ream is provided to hold vertical stirrups. Vertical stirrups are designed to resist shear force. We use 8 or 10 dia for anchor bar in beam.

What are the main objects of the seasoning of timber?
Vivek Patel
Seasoning is a process to remove sap(moisture) from timber. Basically, well-seasoned timber has 12%-15% of moisture content. Basically reason of seasoning is to improve engineer property of timber like To improve hardness, strength and toughness To decrease decay of timber due to moisture To removeRead more

Which pressure us higher in retaining wall, water or soil?
Vivek Patel
The pressure of water is higher act on retaining wall because that water doesn't have any active or passive coefficient, so total pressure of water act = (0.5)* unit weight *height^2 In soil pressure Total soil pressure on retaining wall is =(0.5)*k*unit weight of soil *height^2 In that term,Read more
The pressure of water is higher act on retaining wall because that water doesn’t have any active or passive coefficient, so total pressure of water act = (0.5)* unit weight *height^2
In soil pressure
Total soil pressure on retaining wall is =(0.5)*k*unit weight of soil *height^2
In that term, k = active or passive coefficient.
K active = (1-sin∅)/(1+sin∅)
K passive = (1+sin∅)/(1-sin∅)
So most of the case that is active pressure active on soil.
In active pressure it is less than water pressure
And in passive state soil pressure is higher than water pressure

What are Bearing Capacity Values of Different Types of Soil?
Vivek Patel
Different soil SBC are as follow Bedrock is 574kpa Gravel is 250kpa Sedimentry Rock is 190kpa Sand gravel is 140kpa Sand, silt sand, clayey sand is 95kpa Clay, sandy clay, silty clay is 70kpa In actual site, we conduct several test to find out SBC.

Vivek Patel
yes but due to gravel fill result in an increase in active earth pressure so we need to design retaining wall for higher resisting force so is it economical?
