Modes of Deflection of Tall Buildings

Reading time: 1 minute

There are two modes of deflection of tall buildings which are discussed below. The taller a building is, the greater the problem is of lateral and torsional stiffness. The deflection of a cantilever is a function of the loading, the properties of the structure and the height. Deflection of a cantilever is given by following formula: For a cantilever there are two modes of deflection of a tall building structure, 1. Bending 2. Shear Following figure shows deflection of tall building in bending due to wind. Following figure shows shear deflection of tall building due to wind action.
