What are Solar Windows?

Solar windows are windows with solar panels that absorb ultraviolet and infrared light and convert them into electricity. They use the concept of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). 

This article discusses the features and advantages of solar window technology in the construction industry.

Features of Solar Windows

• Solar windows resemble conventional windows and have photovoltaic glazing which converts solar energy into renewable electricity.
• The type of glass used for the manufacturing of solar windows depends on the application, operation, architectural and energy generation requirements. The common types of glasses used are:
  • Low iron glass: These glasses provide an unrestricted view compared to regular glass. They contain less iron content, resulting in an extremely clear glass that increases light transparency, brightness, and clarity.
  • Regular glass: Regular glass has high iron content. It is used where strength and durability are a concern.
  • Low-E coating glass: Low emissivity glass is used to minimize the passage of UV and infrared light without compromising the visible light that enters the building.
• Solar windows provide transparent, semi-transparent, semi-opaque, and transitional design options. 
• Solar windows can be used as skylights, curtain walls, window walls, punch windows, and fixed windows.

• Figure-2 shows the inside view of solar windows installed in Boulder Commons, Colorado. As shown, the two panes of glass are sealed together. These panels have wires connected to a battery in the building or directly connected to any electric unit near the window, like light or electric blinds. 
• Solar windows can produce around 8-9 Watts of power depending on the amount of solar energy absorbed. 
• Solar windows are efficient and economical when installed in commercial buildings and apartment complexes.

Advantages of Solar Windows

1. Solar windows reduce the indoor temperature during the summer season.
2. They reduce power consumption and hence utility bills.
3. They block ultraviolet radiation, preventing fading of interior furniture.
4. Solar windows increase privacy by providing a tinting option. 
5. They reduce glare within the building.
6. The cost of installation is low compared to solar panels.
7. They lower carbon footprint.
