Zaha Hadid Architects has partnered with Hyperloop Italia to jointly design a Hyperloop high-speed transport system across Italy.

The announcement marks another milestone for the Hyperloop transportation system, which has been gaining prominence worldwide. The agreement confirms the success of the Hyperloop Partnership Program that was launched by Hyperloop Italia to invite partners for developing the project.

A hyperloop can be defined as an ultra-high-speed underground public transportation system that can operate at a speed of 965+ km/h within a vacuum-sealed tunnel. The rapid transport system by Hyperloop Italia aims to propel passenger capsules in pneumatic tubes at speeds of up to 1,190 km/h.

The project will cut the travel time between the country's second-most populous city Milan and its airport (Malpensa), from around 40 minutes to just 10 minutes. Hyperloop Italia is currently carrying out a feasibility study on the proposed route.

Zaha Hadid Architects' principal architect Patrik Schumacher stated, "We are looking forward to collaborating with Hyperloop Italia; marrying transformative architecture, engineering, and urban planning with the most efficient and sustainable transport network to significantly improve accessibility, connectivity, and well-being in our cities".

"We share Hyperloops Italia's multidisciplinary approach, which combines innovations in design and operational technologies with advances in ecologically sound materials and construction practices; enabling us to deliver future-resilient projects that are inventive, structurally efficient, and environmentally sustainable."

Though first proposed by Elon Musk, hyperloop technology is being developed by several companies like Elon Musk's The Boring Company, Virgin Hyperloop, and HyperloopTT. HyperloopTT has licensed the technology to Hyperloop Italia for its use in Italy.

Last year, Virgin Hyperloop had conducted the first passenger test in a hyperloop pod in Las Vegas, US, marking a breakthrough for the technology.
