A conversation pit is an architectural feature that takes the form of a built-in seating facility placed into a depressed section of flooring or a large room. It is essentially a sunken space built into the floor of a large open room. The proximity facilitates comfortable human conversation in the building space. 

The conversation pit or a sunken space was popular during the 1950s across Europe and North America. Its reputation got tarnished due to the hazards and other blunders associated with it. But today, construction pits are slowly gaining interest and are constructed in different designs and patterns.

Conversation pit spaces definitely have their advantages because of which they are making a comeback in architecture.

1. Sunken spaces define the space for large and open concept homes. When the building area has fewer walls, a lower-level room helps delineate the space without ruining the sightlines. Thus, sunken spaces help preserve the feeling of openness without losing any definition between the rooms.
2. Sunken spaces create a comfy space for conversation, board games, etc.
3. A unique conversation pit space introduces a different character to the area compared to a flat, box-like floorplan. 
4. Sunken space between the floor and ceiling makes the room look bigger and spacious. 

Sunken spaces do have drawbacks that need to be considered while planning for a building space.

1. A sunken space can cause accidents due to tripping or falling. If the users do not expect or notice a couple of stairs that lead to the conversation pit, it can result in accidents. 
2. Sunken spaces offer less flexibility that limits its conversion into any other design or layout difficult.

Working With Conversation Pit or Sunken Room

Few construction features that need to be kept in mind while planning for a sunken space are:

1. Always try to differentiate the sunken or conversation pit space from the remaining area. This would help avoid tripping or falling. Installing handrails for the steps to the pit or using different flooring for the stair, or using different colors for the transition between the normal floor and the sunken floor are some of the precautions that can be taken.
2. Use the right furniture for the conversation pit. The right color for couches, tables, pillows, etc. can give the space a clear purpose. 
3. Make the space more inviting using light and bright colors, and try to incorporate the same colors in the rest of the rooms. Always avoid features that would make the pit dark and dank.

Sunken rooms or conversation pits are mostly seen as a part of American architecture and home design. However, keeping in mind a few precautionary steps in the design of the sunken room can bring an excellent and safe design.
