A diamond plate or deck plate is a type of floor plate with one side having textures or raised patterns and the other side being smooth. The patterns and their area can vary based on the design of the diamond plate.
The raised texture on the surface of the plate increases the friction between the foot and the plate surface, reducing the chance of slipping on the walking surface.
Diamond plates are made of metals like steel, stainless steel, plastic, or aluminum. It is a common choice for floor areas or stairs which require increased traction.
This article explains the types of diamond plates used in floor construction.

Manufacturing of Diamond Plates
Diamond metal plates can be manufactured either by stamping or hot rolling methods. A combination of heat and pressure is used in both methods.
In the stamping process, the metal is passed through a series of large rollers at room temperature. One of the rollers is smooth, and the other roller has a diamond pattern. The diamond pattern is etched to one side of the metal by applying pressure. The stamping method is commonly used to make aluminum diamond plates.
In the hot-rolling method, the metal is flash-heated above its recrystallization temperature using an electronic thermal machine. After this step, the metal is passed through the rollers and cooled. The heating method helps prevent flaws from occurring and is often performed to make steel diamond plates.
Types of Diamond Plates
Diamond plates are classified into four types based on the material used for their manufacturing. They are:
- Aluminium diamond plate
- Steel diamond plate
- Stainless steel diamond plate
- Plastic diamond plate
1. Aluminium Diamond Plate
Aluminium diamond deck plate is used in parking lots, stairs, loading docks, boats, and other marine applications. These plates are highly corrosion resistant and easy to wash, which is why they are used in kitchens, walk-in refrigerators or freezers, and restrooms.
Aluminium diamond deck plate is available in different patterns and finishes, which are applied for decorative purposes.
2. Steel Diamond Plate
Carbon steel diamond plates have high strength and are less expensive compared to other diamond plate materials. It is commonly used in commercial and industrial applications like trailer floors, truck beds, stairs, ramps, and vehicle running boards.
3. Stainless Steel Diamond Plate
Stainless steel diamond plate is one of the most expensive diamond plates. It is highly corrosion resistant and the best option for areas exposed to chemical and toxic industrial effluents. Stainless steel diamond plate has a bright finish and is used for decorative purposes.
4. Plastic Diamond Plate
Plastic diamond plates are made out of plastic materials and are waterproof and stain-resistant. It is made in the form of interlocking sheets whose cutting size can be customized as per the requirements. They are available in different sizes, styles, and finishes, making them a good choice for offices, utility rooms, gyms, and garages.
Plastic diamond plates can be painted to match the interior or exterior. They are also used as a wall panel option.
