How to Get Professional Surveyor (PS) License in Mississippi?

In Mississippi, the license for surveyors is provided by the Mississippi Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. This article guides through the requirements and procedures to obtain a Professional Surveyor (PE) license in the state of Mississippi.

Requirements for Mississippi’s Professional Surveyor (PS) Licensure

Only applicants who are residents of Mississippi are eligible to enroll for the initial licensure as Professional Surveyor. All exemptions are mentioned in Rule 3.7 in the document.

The current requirements for PS licensure can be categorized based on education and experience.

Education-based application requirements for Professional Surveyor licensure are:

1. Completion of approved courses as per Mississippi regulations
2. Qualify the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination 
3. Qualifying experience of 4, 5, 6, or 7 years
4. Qualify the Principles & Practice of Surveying (PPS) Exam
5. Qualify the Mississippi Section examination (Mississippi state-specific exam)

Qualifying professional surveying experience for initial (first time) Professional Surveyor (PS) license applicants must be obtained under the supervision of a licensed professional surveyor. If not,  the indirect supervision must be satisfactorily explained with respect to the degree and type of supervision received.

Experience-based application requirements for Professional Surveyor licensure are: 

1. Qualify the Fundamental of Surveying (FS) examination
2. 12 years of qualifying surveying experience
3. Qualify the Principles & Practice of Surveying (PPS) exam
4. Qualify the Mississippi Section examination (Mississippi state-specific exam)

Mississippi Regulations For Approved Courses

As per Rule. 8.3 of  Miss. Code Ann. §73-13-15

PS applicants must have a  four-year curriculum leading to a bachelor of science degree in engineering, mathematics, forestry, GIS, cartography, or a similar science curriculum acceptable to the board. For more information refer to 73-13-77 of Licensure Law.

How to Apply for PS Initial Licensure or PS Exam ?

The steps involved to apply for Mississippi’s PE licensure are given below:

1. Download the Professional Surveyor (PS) licensure application from the website https://www.pepls.ms.gov/ and fill out the form.
2. Provide all the educational qualifications transcripts obtained from the college or university to the board office.
3. Provide the verification details of qualified FE Exam
4. Attach the five Professional Surveyor Reference form(s)

The form, with supporting documents and fee, must be mailed to  Miss. Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers & Surveyors, 660 North Street, Suite 400, Jackson, MS 39202.

The Board reviews completed applications approximately every two to three months. Approved applications will be officially cited to the exam(s). The applicant will be advised by letter, directing to the exam registration process for the PPS with the exam proctor, NCEES (www.ncees.org); and for the Mississippi Section examination (MS state specific exam) which is proctored by the Board’s staff in Jackson, MS.
