Reading time: 1 minute

Paint by Drone is a technological solution that proposes the idea of using the facades of construction sites as giant canvases for artistic expression.

It is an idea developed by the International Design and Innovation Office, Carlo Ratti Associati. The concept involves turning any blank vertical surface into a space for the visualization of the urban environment.

The essential elements and working of the paint by drone system are explained in this article.

Paint By Drone System

Paint by Drone system consists of a set of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that have a width of one meter. Each drone is equipped with sensors and a spraying tank. Like the traditional printing process, each drone paints the vertical surfaces with Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key (CMYK).

A central management system regulates the real-time operations of the drone. It regulates the painting process and flight operations using an advanced monitoring system. This monitoring system tracks the precise location of the UAV’s position. A space for safe drone movement is created using a protective net placed on the scaffolding cover. The artistic input to the drones is provided using crowdsourced platforms.

Most of the cities today are filled with blank vertical spaces or disfigured with advertising posters. With the Paint by Drone concept, any facade can serve as a space to showcase new collaborative art.
