    2. By reducing the water/cement ratio or add some additives which accelerate the hydrated reaction.

    Test for setting time-based on ASTM C403M - 16 Apparatus: Container penetration needles: Temping road: 16 mm in diameter and 600 mm length Pipet: withdrawal of bleed water from the surface.     Test for setting time-based on ASTM C403M – 16

    Apparatus:

    1. Container
    2. penetration needles:
    3. Temping road: 16 mm in diameter and 600 mm length
    4. Pipet: withdrawal of bleed water from the surface.
    5. Thermometer
    6. Stopwatch

    Preparation of sample:

    1. Prepared a 3 specimen
    2. Sieve cement from 4.75 mm IS sieve.
    3. Make a cement paste by adding water.
    4. Make that cement paste non-absorptive
    5. Measure the temperature of the Mortar.
    6. Place that mortar in the container.
    7. Remove all the voids and by tamping via tamping rod.
    8. Level the surface.

    Procedure:

    1. Remove bleed water from the surface by pipet.
    2. By measuring the degree of Mortar, then select a suitable size needle.
    3. take the point of the needle into contact with the mortar paste.
    4. Allow a needle to penetrate freely into the mortar paste up to a depth of 25 mm.
    5. Record the time elapsed between the initial contact of cement and water and the penetration of the needle into the mortar paste. Indicates the setting of cement.
    6. Calculate penetration resistance= Recorded Force / Bearing area of the needle.

    The time between the contact of water to cement and makes the cement sets is called a setting time of cement.

    Bituminous Macadam is a Binder which is used for the 24-meter & 12-meter roads where the traffic movement is heavy. This can be laid in two or more courses for the better compressive strength. This shall comprise of 5 TO 7 percentage of bitumen.

    Semi Dense Bituminous Macadam is a binder that is laid after the BM course to obtain smoother finish on road surfaces. This is used in small roads of width less than 9 Meters. This course is laid directly on the wet mix macadam in smaller roads with a thickness of 25-30 mm. This shall comprise of 3 to 5 percentage of Bitumen.
