Tunnels can be aligned either straight or inclined. The check for accuracy of alignment and levels is achieved using vertical shafts. The determination of surface alignment and measurements are performed during tunnel surveying. This is called a setting out of a tunnel, which involves the main steps:

    1. Surface Survey: In this method, a preliminary survey is performed by precise traversing using theodolite to join the two ends of the proposed tunnel. With the help of a standard plan and based on a detailed survey, a final alignment is selected.
    2. Transfer of alignment from surface to underground: This step involves the transfer of centerline or alignment on the surface to the underground shafts.
    3. Transferring the levels underground: The leveling of the underground surface is performed in the usual way. Nearest benchmarks are used to transfer the levels underground.

    Hi Adarsh,

Very happy to see how determined you are. From your question, it’s very much clear that you have a great interest in structural engineering. Being an entrepreneur and bringing up a structural design firm is a very big opportunity which has great competition.

According to my opinion as to start with,

    1. Go for industrial training during your engineering period.
    2. Also, get training for structural design and drawing software.
    3. Once you complete your engineering, register as a civil engineer and become an authorized civil engineer. You will be provided with a license to draw building plans and designs. The procedure is different in different states.
    4. Once you complete academics get into a structural design firm and explore maximum.
    5. Finally, when you feel you are ready, start drawing for your clients. As clients always prefer experienced professionals, I would recommend you to get experience by working in an external firm.

At any point of time, if you wish to study and research more on structural design, having a PG program is a good decision. This not only increases your knowledge but also is an added advantage for your self startup.
