    Arch Dam ;

    Arch dam can be defined as a solid wall, curved in plan, standing across the entire width of the river valley in a single span. The body of arch dam is generally made of cement concrete. Thus, arch dam is just a curved beam, the ends of which are restrained and the way in which the loads are resisted is termed a arch action.

     

    Buttress Dam ;

    A buttress dam or hollow dam with a solid, water-tight upstream side that is supported at intervals on the downstream side by a series of buttresses or supports. A buttress dam envisages to reduce the total volume of concrete by constricting the material where the stresses are higher and other undesirable features of gravity dam but has higher cement content per cubic metre of concrete than a gravity dam.

    Tensile test is done on cylinder because only cylinders can be held under pure tension by applying a compressive load. That will only happen if it was under pure tension. If we take any other prismatic shape such as square cross section cylinder, the failure will be via compression but not tension.

    Here, consider lens or mirror at the origin. Now, all the distances measured in the direction of incident rays are positive and distances measured in the direction opposite to the direction of incident rays are negative. All distances have to be measured from the lens or mirror. For example object distance measured from lens or mirror is measured in the direction opposite to direction of incident rays hence, in these case object distance u is negative. The paraxial parallel rays are focused on the right hand side of convex lens. See, this distance f is measured in the direction of incident rays . Hence, focal length of convex lens is positive. But, we can see that focal length of concave mirror is negative. It’s radius of curvature is also negative. The radius of curvature of first surface of convex lens is positive, but radius of curvature of it’s second surface is negative. You can see that radius of curvature and focal length of concave mirror are negative.

    Gravity dam, as the name suggests, is a dam that resists the water upstream by the use of its weight itself, unlike earthen dams and embankment dams that employ the shear strength of the soil.

    The dam is designed so that the resultant of the water pressure, earth pressure, and all other forces are aligned and balanced by the weight of the dam itself.

    They are generally made of Roller compacted concrete.

    Jamb and corbel are two different technical terms used in masonry.


    The difference in between jam and corbel are discussed below;

    1) Definition:

    • Jamb– A finished vertical sides of the opening of Window or door is called as a jamb.
    • corbel- A supporting a stone projecting outside from the wall is called a corbel.

    2) Function:

    • Jamb– jamb is provided at the recess to receive the frames of doors and frames of Windows
    • Corbel– corbel is provided to give support to joist, truss and weather shed.

    • Jamb has two types:
    1. Plane jamb
    2. Splayed jamb

    • Mostly Corbel is moulded to give ornamental treatment to the structure.
    • The corbel should be extended at least two-thirds of their length into the wall hence they can’t overturn out of the wall.

    The Golden Ratio is an irrational number with never-ending infinite numbers of digits, 1.618033988749895…, which are highly confusing and misleading. It is a linear number and represents only two dimensions of the object.

    Here is one way to draw a rectangle with the Golden Ratio:

    • Draw a square (of size “1”)
    • Place a dot half way along one side
    • Draw a line from that point to an opposite corner (it will be √5/2 in length)
    • Turn that line so that it runs along the square’s side

    Then you can extend the square to be a rectangle with the Golden Ratio.
