    TIE BEAM :-

    The beam which connects two or more columns/rafters in a roof/roof truss or in any height above floor level is called tie beam. Tie beams are mainly provided in roof truss and at plinth level. These beams do not convey any floor loads and only act as length breaker for columns where the floor height is unusually high.

    The main purpose of tie beam is to carry axial compression and to transfer the rafters load to the column. It also prevents column from buckling.

    PLINTH BEAM :-

    The beam which is provided at the plinth level is called plinth beam. In farmed structure, this beam is the first beam constructed after foundation.

    The purpose of plinth beam is to distribute loads of walls over the foundation and it also connect all the columns. It also prevents cracks from the foundation to the wall. It also avoid differential settlement.

    Plinth Beam

    The beam whichis built at plinth level is known as plinth beam. In framed structure, plinth beam is the 1st beam built after foundation.

    It is also r/f’d concrete beam constructed betn the wall & foundation & sometime also constructed on DPC.

    • To distribute the load of walls over the foundation.
    • To connect all the columns.
    • To prevent cracks from the foundations to the wall.
    • Strength of beam concrete should ≮ 20MPa.
    • To avoid differential settlement.
    • If concrete is mixed manually, then an extra of 20% cement need to be added to the mix.
    • Min depth is 20cm.

    Tie Beam

    The beam which connects 2 or more columns/rafters in a roof truss or in any ht above floor level is known as tie beam. Tie beamare mainly provided in roof truss & at plinth level. These beams don’t convey any floor loads & only act as length breaker for columns where the floor ht is unusually high.

    • To carry axial comp.
    • To convey the rafters load to column.
    • To prevent column from buckling.

    Now coming to the actual diff betn plinth & tie beam. Actually there is no diff betn them. Tie beam is also type of plinth beam. When tie beam is provided at plinth level, it is known as plinth beam. That says the only diff is ht at which they are built.

    Plinth beam is only provided at plinth level but tie beam is provided anywhere above plinth & floor level.

    Difference between Tie beam & plinth beam

    As the name mentioned, both are the beams. And I think there is no main difference in it.

    Plinth beam:

    1. As we all know, the plinth beam is the part of the substructure, from the plinth beam superstructure getting started.
    2. The plinth beam always constructed to the ground level.
    3. After the footing or foundation plinth beam is built.
    4. The plinth beam transfers the load to footing which from the superstructure.
    5. Plinth beam connected to all the columns.

    Tie beam

    1. The tie beam is also part of the plinth beam, so it is not just part of the superstructure.
    2. The tie beam is constructed anywhere as per requirement above the plinth level or floor level.
    3. Tie beam carrying the axial compression and transfer the load to the Columns.
    4. Tie beam connects two or more columns

    The plinth beam is provided at the plinth level of a structure, i.e, above the foundation.

    Tie beam can be provided at any height in the structure. The tie beam is provided to increase the stiffness of the columns and to avoid buckling.
