    Compaction test of soil is carried out using Proctor’s test for understanding the compaction characteristics of different soils with change in moisture content. The ability for compacting a soil depends on the water content of the soil. Thus, water acts as a lubricant between the soil grains however as its content increases the water may occupy the entire pores. Since it is relatively incompressible in comparison to the air it may restrict compaction. Proctor compaction test is used to determine the optimum moisture content during compaction which gives the greatest soil density.

How to Check and Maintain Slopes of Pipes and Drains at Construction Sites?

    Slopes in pipes and drains are decided by quantity of water or wastewater to be transported through it by the action of gravity in cumecs. Following things influence the slopes of drains and pipes: 1. Quantity of water to be transported 2. Size or diameter of the pipe 3. Distance the water to be carRead more

    Slopes in pipes and drains are decided by quantity of water or wastewater to be transported through it by the action of gravity in cumecs. Following things influence the slopes of drains and pipes:

    1. Quantity of water to be transported

    2. Size or diameter of the pipe

    3. Distance the water to be carried

    4. Velocity or the pressure required for the water at the outlet, if any

    Slopes of drains and pipes at construction site is checked by dumpy level or level machines. For the same, you have to calculate depth of pipes at different intervals.

    Suppose, 1:4 slope of the pipe is required as per drawing (as mentioned by you), then the depth of pipe at should have a difference of 1 m from start of the pipe to the end of pipe at 4m. If you want to know the depth of pipe at 2m length, then it will be half of the end position, i.e. 0.5m. These are calculated based on triangle.

    Slopes are always mentioned w.r.t. a reference point. Consider your reference point as a levelled surface. Then length of the pipe required will be length of the triangle, base will be the depth required from the start to end of the pipe. Now you can divide the triangle at different point and calculate the depth required at different locations of the pipeline or drain system.

    Water proofing is done using shotcrete not concrete. Basement should be built using concrete . Water proofing can also be done by polymer membrane systems called tanking ( refer to CIRIA). I used ACI 506 to design shotcrete. Its should be of 28Mpa strength using 12mm down aggregates.

    Estimate pouring speed and match it production speed to avoid waiting and approaching it’s setting time, keep home work-ready with trials for options (e.g., redosing with SP) for reusing leftover concrete, inform Batching plant when 10% of the pour is balanced and reduce trucks carrying concrete thereafter, explore the scope for casting precast blocks from leftover / used in testing, etc. concrete,
    Deploy a supervisor to be in touch with Batching Plant from site to hold or slow down concrete supply if there is any issue at the site, keep critical spare parts of Concrete Pumps, etc. available at site 24 x 7, deploy an experienced Pump operator and a Concrete specialist at the site

    1. Small precast forms(curbs, drain slabs, etc., which are needed in the project) to be kept ready at the site near the RMC pouring area fresh concrete waste needs to be handled into these forms. Optimum labor to be maintained to handle these operations.

    2. Retrieve the aggregates by washing off the waste concrete.

    3. Order the right quantity of concrete required to finish the pour, hence reducing the wastage.

    4. Have at least one spare pump at the site when pouring a large quantity of concrete.

    5. Have the right waste concrete segregation pits at RMC plants to wash the wet concrete and to retrieve the coarse aggregates.
