    As per Is 456 – 2000, when using a helical reinforcement, we can consider an increase of 5% in the strength,

    Since helical reinforcements provide good ductility, it is suitable for earthquake prone regions where ductility is an important factor.

    Helical reinforcement is capable of protecting columns or piles against seismic loads.

    Whenever the column reaches the failure condition, then concrete outside hoops will crack & it falls off first, followed by the whole columns’ eventual failure.


    The more important thing is the peeling off of concrete outside helical reinforcement provides a warning signal suddenly just before the failure of columns.


    Which can take up the highest working load as compare to normal link reinforcement.

    Helical reinforcement has the potential advantage of protecting columns/piles against seismic loads so due to this reason most of the engineers tends to use helical reinforcement instead of ordinary columns. Using of helical reinforcement increases 5% of more strength on spirals.

    Moreover, when the columns reach the failure state, the concrete outside hoops cracks and falls off firstly, followed by the eventual failure of the whole columns. The peeling off of concrete outside helical reinforcement provides a warning signal before the sudden failure of columns. In addition, it can take up a higher working load than normal link reinforcement. Hence helical reinforcement is adopted in the design of marine piles in government piers.

    The small dia reinforcement wrapped around the main or longitudinal reinforcement of columns, restraining the lateral expansion of the concrete under compression and thus strengthening the column. Columns with one helical reinforcement take more load than that of tied column due to additional strength of spiral.

    Helical reinforcement can protect columns/piles against seismic loads.
