Generally, for cheap and on-site production of waterproofing, a combination of aggregate chippings and aggregate dust is combined with bitumen emulsion and is completely laid over the constructed road. The emulsion itself can vary in type.

Other than this, there are waterproofing solutions manufactured for roads (bituminous roads). Some common ingredients that I know are :

    • Oil bitumen, petroleum bitumen, emulsified bitumen, organic solvents
    • Aggregate chippings, rubber crumbs, mineral fibres and plasticizers.

There may be more, but these are a few common ones.

Waterproofing is most important to increase the life of the pavement. The following are some materials or admixtures used globally for waterproofing of cement concrete roads as well as bitumen pavement.

    • For cement concrete roads: potash soaps, calcium stearate, aluminium stearate, butyl stearate, petroleum wax emulsion.
    • For bitumen road: bitumen with proper asphalt content, petroleum wax emulsion mixed in bitumen, rubber crumbs, plasticizers like Vandex, Xypex, CN2000 etc

But to make the road pavement waterproofing ensure that the mix did properly and provide enough camber to remove water from the road surface. It is the cheapest and most economical method to make road pavement waterproof.
