The most important reason for providing cavity walls is thermal insulation. Cavity walls tend to resist heat in summers Summers and retain heat in the building during winters. They also help.in keeping the inside a bit drier as compared to solid wall buildings.
Also, cavity walls reduce their own weight onto the footings.
Cavity walls are used to expel rainwater by allowing a wind flow in the cavity and thus prevent damp.
They resist wind-driven rain.
They allow for cheaper insulation material to be used to the same effect as compared to normal masonry walls.
Economically cheaper than solid walls.

The cavity wall is a wall that has a hollow center. They are provided with space between two skins, usually made with masonry such as brick or cinder blocks. They can provide better thermal insulation than other solid walls. Also, they are cheaper than other solid walls. By using the cavity wall, the entering of moisture can be prevented effectively. It also acts as a damp barrier. It is very easy to install at a cheaper rate.
A wall consisting of two leaves of masonry units are separated by a cavity and tied together with metal tiles is called a cavity wall.

Use of cavity wall:
Cavity walls ensure a gap between two walls and considering the entire structure as a single unit. Cavity walls are also known as hollow walls. The walls are interconnected with metal ties for proper bond and usually, insulation materials are provided in between.
The two walls of the structure is called leaves of the cavity wall. The exposed wall of the building in the cavity wall is called the outer leaf and the interior one is called inner leaf. The cavity size should be 4 to 10 cm.
Cavity walls ensures the prevention of dampness by absorbing moisture with the outer leaf and not to percolate it to the inner leaf.
Cavity walls are provided where it needs proper insulation from the sound.
It ensures more thermal insulation than solid walls. The air in between the leaves reduces heat transmission.
Economical than solid walls though it is providing more benefits with less use of the area.
Cavity walls are free from efflorescence effects.
Cheaper than providing single solid wall insulation.
The weight of the cavity wall over footing is lesser than that of solid walls.
These are the major causes of choosing a cavity wall. Apart from these uses cavity walls are having some disadvantages too.
The various causes of providing cavity wall are as follows :-
1. Damp Prevention :- Cavity walls reduces the chance of moisture intrusion from outer leaf to the inner leaf and thus helps in keeping inside of the building free from dampness.
2. Thermal Insulation :- The air in the cavity wall acts as a non-conductor of heat and hence minimizes the transmission of heat from the outer leaf to the internal face of the interior leaf. Thus, cavity walls help in maintaining the thermal insulation of a premise.
3. Sound Insulation :- The air in the cavity acts as a cushion for absorbing sound. By building cavity walls, a premise may work as a sound proof zone as a large quantity of external noise gets absorbed within the cavity.
4. Efflorescence Prevention :- As dampness is not allowed to penetrate the cavity, the inner leaf of the cavity, which is always a load bearing wall, is kept free from efflorescence effects.
5. Economy :- According to ‘W. B. McKay’ (Author of Building Construction), building a 275 mm cavity wall costs less than constructing a 328 mm solid wall (which is of the minimum thickness if dampness has to be mostly avoided). This measuring data may vary from one place to another and on the specific climate of the construction site. One has to calculate the customized details before deciding the measurement of a cavity wall.
