    Well, if you’re analyzing a beam, then the quickest and easiest way is hands down, the moment – area method. Students often overlook it and delve into complex methods while the problem may be solved a lot easily.

    Other than this, there are often other quick methods depending on the question. For example sometimes the conjugate beam method is not such a bad choice. If you can write the moment curvature equation and are quick at differentiation, you can use that.

    I for one, never get into slope deflection method unless it is strictly needed. I stick to moment area, conjugate beam and the 4th order differential equation.

    Also, a friendly tip : just have a look at the options especially in the IES paper. They never push you into long calculations. You could sense that some options just have to be wrong and are nowhere close to be correct. In GATE, this approach doesn’t fare well though.

    Bar bending schedule (BBS) is a comprehensive, detailed list of reinforcement bars to be used in an RCC construction along with their number, location, mark, type, size, lengths, details in correspondence with the drawings. It also includes the timing for the bending of each bar, and that is why it’s called a bending schedule.

    Bars are needed to be bent in order to give them the desired reinforcement shape. Stirrups and anchorages are two places where bar bending is compulsory. In addition, when we need to join bars, we might want to bend them on the ends before welding or fastening.

    BBS also gives a clear and logical understanding as to how much bars of what sizes will be needed to be procured and bent by what time so that no delay, all procurement is done with minimal transport expenses, and all bending is done with minimal machine and labor costs.

    If the wall is rigid and cannot be move when the pressure exerted on the wall, then the soil behind the wall is in the state of static equilibrium. This case is called rest earth pressure.

    For bridges, slab walls and Abutments is soil mass or backfill with static equilibrium is required because it can bear the heavy load. Thus for safety point of view in construction pressure at rest is considered. In this case, all the pressures are being exerted uniformly on the retaining wall.

    There are two types of conditions developed

    For normally consolidated clay,

    K= 1- sin(¢)

    For overconsolidated clay

    K(overconsolidated )= K(normally consolidated clay) x √OCR 

    OCR= OVERCONSOLIDATION RATIO
