    What specifications are available in India for low cost and good quality housing construction?

     low-cost housing

    Definition :

    An innovative concept in which effective budgeting is taken into account by using some technologies which reduce the cost of construction effectively.


    Important parameters considered in low-cost housing :

    • Building construction material used in low-cost housing for construction depends upon the locality of that area.
    • The method of low-cost housing construction also depends upon the skilled labour availability in that region
    • We should choose wisely in building construction material and method of construction without compromising the strength durability and performance of the structure
    • There is a huge misconception that low-cost housing is only suitable for low substandard works and very cheap quality construction material is used
    • Reality is that low-cost housing should be done by proper management of various resources
    • Economic can be achieved by postponing the finishing work.

    One of the low-cost construction methods is using gypsum panels called GFRG panels (Glass Fibre Reinforced Gypsum panels). This technology is widely used in Australia. In India, IIT Madras has been developing the design procedure for these panels. They can be built fast, just like precast panels. Using these panels, only load-bearing structures can be built. IIT Madras claims that it cuts down the cost by 20%, with the buildings having the same life expectancy as the conventional buildings.

    However, this is true only if mass construction is made. For a single residential building, the gypsum panels may prove to be uneconomical.
