    Approximately 15 to 30% of ordinary Portland cement is replaced with fly ash in Portland pozzolana cement.

    The compressive strength of Portland pozzolana cement is more for long term use compared to ordinary Portland cement.

    Ordinary Portland cement is one of the widely used cement.

    For residential construction, we prefer Portland pozzolana cement as compared to ordinary Portland cement. We use ordinary Portland cement only for commercial purposes.

    Three grades of cement are available 33, 43, and 53.

    33 grade of cement means the compressive strength of cement after 28 days of curing should be at least 33 mega Pascal not more than that value.

    43 grade of cement was the compressive strength of cement after 28 days of curing should be at least 43 Newton per mm square or more than that.

    Similarly, 53 Grade of cement means compressive strength of cement after 28 days of curing should be at least 53 Newton per mm square or more than that value.

    The purpose and usage of plasticizer are as follows ;

    • Used to convert a rigid plastic into a soft, flexible and elastic material.
    • Increases the plasticity nature of the mix to decrease its viscosity.
    • It imparts flexibility to resin and minimizes film cracking
    • It is also used as an air entraining agent.
    • It decreases the water/cement ratio and gives high strength.
    • It helps in improvement of workability of the mix.

    Effect of Aggregate Cement Ratio on Workability of Concrete

    Aggregate cement ratio is the ratio of weights of aggregate to the weight of cement. If this ratio is more, that implies aggregates are more and cement is less and if this ratio is less, that implies weight of aggregate is less and weight of cement is more (relatively).

    When the weight of cement is more, i.e. aggregate cement ratio is less, the concrete has more cement paste required to coat aggregates and fill the voids between them. This more cement paste makes the concrete relatively easy to  mix, place and compact as it reduces the friction between aggregates and allows its smooth movement. Thus the workability of concrete increases.

    When the weight of cement is less, i.e. aggregate cement ratio is more, then there will be very less cement paste to coat aggregate surfaces and fill the voids, thus, mixing, placing and compacting of concrete will be more harder than previous case. This implies, the workability of concrete will be less than previous case.

    Concrete degradation may have various causes and reasons. It can be damaged by factors like fire, alkali - aggregate reaction expansion, sea water effects, bacterial corrosion, calcium leaching, physical and chemical damage from carbonation, corrosion of reinforcements and many others.

    We don’t assume concrete strength to be 2/3rd of the characteristic strength, but there’s a logical reason behind it. She’s only stated the shape factor with the correct 20% decrease in strength, but there is also a size factor.

    What happens is, first of all, due to slenderness, concrete cylinders have shown to have 80% of the characteristic strength corresponding to 150mm cubes. But also, even concrete cubes of sizes exceeding 450mm show only 85% the strength as compared to the standard 150mm ones. Since the concrete members will neither be cubes and not just 450mm, we need to take into account both the factors.

    So, the new compressive strength becomes 0.8*0.85*fck = 0.68 fck. Now, 0.68 fck is very close to 0.67 fck or fck/1.5. So, for a rounder figure, we take it as 0.67 fck.

    Note: This 1.5 isn’t the factor of safety. (FoS). A factor of 1.5 is further applied for design and the design strength becomes 0.67 fck / 1.5 = 0.446 fck.

    The PH value is very important in construction activities, particularly for reinforced cement concrete as it is a composite material created with embedded steel bars. If the PH value of water is less than 7 which is the neutral value for good drinking water, then the water will be acidic. The cement concrete’s PH value for fresh concrete will be 12 to 13. This indicates that the concrete is alkaline which gives passivity to protect steel bars from getting corroded. If the water having less PH value than 6, it will start neutralizing the PH value of concrete from 12, to 7 and less, the long lasting alkaline passivity of concrete is considerably reduced, triggering the corrosion chmesity for steel and destroy the steel over a period.

    There are certain methods to remove the delaminated concrete, and then formwork is to be fixe. After that, the application of repair material like a dry pack, and wet pack, shotcrete, is carried out if reinforcement is not removed while fixing the pipe.

    You can try one other method also, by fixing plate bonding in the beam on the bottom to enhance the flexural strength, you will have to rest the plate on the bricks, and for that, you will have to remove the top layer of the brick. You also may need to provide scaffolding if you are altering the load-bearing wall. As it is a load-bearing structure, if any alteration is done in the load-bearing wall, it should be done with the consultation of a structural engineer.
