    Causes of honeycombing in the column:

    1. Improper mixing ratio
    2. Vibrating not done properly
    3. Use of excessive stiff concrete.
    4. Use of figure size of aggregate in concrete during mixing.
    5. Curing not done properly

    Following are the remedies of honeycombing in the column:

    1. the spacing of reinforcement should be maintained properly so that the vibrating needle goes middle in of the column and operating properly. If the spacing of reinforcement and stirrups is less, this illustrates the vibrating operations.
    2. In a column, strictly use of less than 20 mm aggregate used to reduce honeycombing defects.
    3. Tapping the shuttering with the help of wooden hammer during concreting this helps for minimising the honeycomb being up to great extent.
    4. Use of a thinner needle, it may be less than 25 mm. This allows vibrating at in very less space in the column.

    Seasoning of stone :

    Generally, the action of having various changes in different seasons on the stone which are drying and wetting of stone which gradually forms the crack in stones which leads to the action of weathering action and forms inorganic small size materials is called seasoning of stone.

    Seasoning refers to both drying and wetting cycles on one hand, and airing of stone, on the other hand. Dehydration during seasoning is more or less an irreversible process. Thus seasoning applied mainly to soft limestone; hard limestone seems to less affected by it. Stones have natural moisture, known as quarry sap. This quarry sap renders the stone blocks comparatively soft and makes them easy for working. Immediately after quarrying, a stone is soft and is easy to work with it so sized and primarily dressed, but polishing requires a fully seasoned and hardened stone.

During the execution of work, the necessity arises to do some works which are not given in the contract, but the contractor has been requested to carry out such works and payment will be made after supplemental rates and agreement are executed

    This is extra. work

    Example Providing stainless steel handrails instead of aluminum handrails

    Here extra work is provision of stainless steel handrails

    During the execution of foundation work, the quantity given in the agreement is exceeding due to actual type of soil

    Here additional quantity of earthwork, filling, RR work will be coming which are needed

    Usually in the agreement itself it will be mentioned that the rates are applicable up to 5% more or less besides quantity

    Here the additional work comes.

    (R.B. Masonry) :

    Definition:

    Composite structural material that consists of load-bearing brickwork masonry with reinforcement.


    Important parameter regarding reinforced brick masonry:

    • A suitable length of metal (usually it is steel) is inserted in brickwork for proper bond formation.
    • Appropriate formation of the bond is essential because to render the resultant composite capable of resisting not only the compressive stresses but also the tensile and shear stresses which can obtain in a structure.

    Construction materials needed :

    • First-class brick
    • Reinforcement (Wrought iron, flat bar, Steel meshes)
    • Cement mortar (1 : 3)

    Applications of reinforced brick masonry :

    • It is used in columns and piers
    • In brick arches, reinforced brickwork is preferred
    • Nowadays, reinforced brickwork is used in brick slab
    • It is also used in reinforced beam

    Advantages of reinforced brick masonry over conventional brick masonry :

    • Lower cost housing
    • Reinforced brick masonry plays an important role during an earthquake
    • Lowest labour cost
    • It gives weather protection
    • It is cheaply supervised
    • It provides additional strength to our structure

    We should start to use M-sand as one of the alternative building construction material so that impacts on the environment will get reduced to some extent.

    Here, I will be discussing some advantages and disadvantages of manufactured sand.


    Advantages of manufactured sand :

    • Manufactured sand has a higher fineness modulus index as compared to natural sand
    • It has better abrasion resistance because manufactured sand is free from silt and clay.
    • Lower Permeability
    • Higher unit weights
    • It has very less destructive to our environment because it highly reduces sand mining from the river bed.
    • It has good workability of concrete
    • Higher-strength
    • Greater durability.

    Disadvantages of manufactured sand:

    • Higher cost
    • More requirement of water-cement due to its smooth and angular texture to achieve appropriate workability.
    • Presence of more amount of micro-fine particles that adversely affect on strength and workability of concrete.
