    The capacity of the soil to allow the loads coming from the foundation is called the bearing capacity of the soil.
    It is essential to know the bearing capacity of the soil before designing the foundation. Different field tests can determine it. However, standard safe bearing capacity values are available for different soil types, and these values can be assumed where test data is limited or speedy construction is required.

    S.No Type of Soil Safe Bearing Capacity ( kN/m2)
    Cohesive Soils
    1. Soft shale, hard or stiff clay in a deep bed, dry state 440
    2. Medium clay readily indented with a thumbnail 245
    3. Moist clay and Sand clay mixture, which can be indented by thumb pressure 150
    4. Black cotton soil/expansive clay ( 50% saturated) in the dry state 130 to 160
    5. Soft clay indented with moderate thumb pressure 100
    6. Very soft clay which can be penetrated with the thump up to few centimeters 50
    Cohesionless Soil
    7. Compact gravel/sand and gravel mixture with good resistance against penetration of tools 440

    It depends on the condition of soil. Wt of dry soil +wt of water in soil + overlying Wt if any and so on. read the fallowing article in google for better idea. Vertical stress in the ground

    Basically the artificial intelligence systems are used to protect many aspects of geotechnical Engineering

    We can use artificial intelligence in that field where uncertainty exist such as Rock and soil properties

    We can definitely use artificial intelligence in the constitutive relationships and prediction of settlement

    For finding out the bearing capacity of given soil sample and liquefaction we can definitely use artificial intelligence system.

    With the help of artificial intelligence  we can investigate  the long term performance of payments very effectively without introducing any manual error in it.

    We can definitely use artificial intelligence in the field of rockfall as well as slope stability evaluations.

    In the geologist studying the land is determined whether it is stable enough to support the proposed project or not.

    The outcrop is a visible exporter of ancient Bedrock. 

    The outcrop is essential to understand fossil fuels. 

    Geologist also studying water patterns in a different type of situations.

    The study of different water patterns used to identify the flood-prone area in that region.

    Actually, some civil engineer can use geologist for the examination of rocks. Which simply means that whether it is metal, oil, natural gas or groundwater.

    drained shear test: during the shearing of the sample, the rate of displacement should be adjusted to allow the drainage is called a drained share test. Drained strength of parameters is determined for the long-term stability of cut slopes.

    undrained shear test: it is a peak value of shear stress in a horizontal direction. This test is conducted on a cylindrical sample which is encased in a wire-reinforced membrane.

    In simple words, it is a compression test in which the specimen of soil is consolidated first under a pressure around in which a tri-axial cell before failures is about to increase the major principal stress.

    Absolutely Yes, factors of seepage are very important to determine before the construction of a dam or even after the construction of the dam for maintenance work.

    Electrical resistivity method is used to determine the amount of seepage and depth of seepage.

    As a civil engineer, it’s our responsibility to provide higher safety.

    Seepage under the embankment is very much dangerous as compared to concrete dams because embankments are built on a very soft material which is easily scoured and it is very vulnerable for the influence of water.

    On other side concrete dam, is built on hard strata and even the defective dam which not the endangered by passing of water from the underside.

    Following are the methods for controlling  seepage

    1. Providing drainage
    2. By reducing the seepage with some proper methods.
    3. Largely use of filters for preventing the piping and heave
